Wie Kennzeichenerkennung funktioniert
/ How license plate recognition is used in the context of parking.

Automatic license plate recognition via camera

Access control should be simple and smart. What could be better than controlling access via the unique selling point of every vehicle: the license plate?

When entering and leaving parking areas, would you also prefer to drive through comfortably without any further action, such as pulling parking tickets? That's exactly what license plate recognition makes possible! In addition, it offers other advantages that make parking more pleasant: 1. the flow of traffic at the entrance and exit is significantly higher, because no one has to stop anymore. So you get in and out of the parking garage quickly 2. you don't need any additional means of identification, such as parking tickets. This saves time (for parkers) and money (for parking operators). In addition, it protects the environment, since the issuance of parking tickets is saved.

How license plate recognition works

Smooth entry and exit via license plate recognition works with the help of a so-called ANPR or LPR camera. ANPR and LPR are abbreviations for "Automatic Number Plate Recognition" and "License Plate Recognition," respectively. One camera is usually installed for each entrance and exit. The camera viewing angle is aligned so that the focus of the camera is perfectly on the vehicle's license plate. Induction loops in the floor provide the camera with a signal, and the license plate is processed as a numeric or alphanumeric string in the background system. When properly installed, the recognition rates are so high that almost any license plate can be captured. Additional measures, such as minimizing interference, can further optimize recognition rates.

With parkoneer's solution, parking authorization holders also receive a QR code that they can use to drive in if the license plate is not read at some point. In this way, we ensure that all authorized parkers actually enter the parking area.

Deposit the license plate and off you go!

After the license plate has been recorded at the entrance, the recognized character string (e.g. MG SB 1872) is compared with a database. Here two cases can be distinguished: the license plate is known or the license plate is unknown. The first case occurs when the license plate is already pre-registered, i.e. assigned to a known parker. The second case occurs when someone is either not authorized to park in the parking area or is a so-called spontaneous parker.

Prior reservation of license plates makes sense especially in systems with digital parking management and dynamically used parking space - like parkoneer is one. In office parking, for example, employees' license plates can be stored. This gives them free access and they do not need any further identification such as a parking card. If the parking area is also made available to other users, such as residents, they can register their license plates and also use the parking area. In this way, the parking area is used more dynamically and more efficiently.
